It seems to me that the J-Pop scene is often more about cults of personality than about the songs themselves; which is, no doubt, how some artists like it. But what are some of our favorite J-Pop/Rock tunes–that can even survive their creators to be given new life by another artist? One of my personal favorites is the mid-tempo rocker TIME MACHINE ni Onegai, originally penned by 70’s rock group Sadistic Mika Band.

A plea of escape from the modern age to a more fashionable time, this tune was clever and catchy in the original; but it didn’t really shine until it was given the squeaky-girl treatment by up-and-coming Browny Circus and used as the closing theme for the landmark film Kamikaze Girls (Shimotsuma Monagatari).

It is a fine film! And the soundtrack is worth buying for this and Cecil’s “Super Shomin Car” (but Amazon is pretty much the only place you can find it these days)

I’ve heard of the movie but never heard of the band.
