So I was eating Chinese dinner last night; my fortune cookie said: “Quit talking so much, egghead.” To which of course I mentally added “in bed,” which might also be good advice. But in this spirit, here is a return to form with a good old-fashioned Top Five List on the subject of that greatest of time wasters, anime YouTube videos. And if you aren’t already addicted to them, you, my friend, are in for a treat.

5. Azumanga Daioh: Waka Laka For Osaka

Watch this when you feel blue. If it doesn’t cheer you up, it may be time to consider suicide.

4. Avenue Q/Genshiken/Various: Stop Watching And Go Outside

The songs from Avenue Q, my gay father’s favorite Broadway musical, have become a popular subject for mashups like this. Whoever made this deserves a medal. He probably also needs to get a life.

3. Kanon Catch Phrase Collection

I can never resist the opportunity to plug the 2006 remake of Kanon, perhaps the greatest anime ever made, but this may be funny even if you don’t know Kanon. I never noticed Sayuri’s annoying little laugh until this.

2. Azumanga Daioh: Inward Singing

I didn’t know jack about Jack Black before I saw this video, but it really tells you everything you need to know about him and his fake “band,” Tenacious D. I might add that the lip-synching here is incredible.

Oliver Hirschbeigel’s Downfall is a terrifying and relentless look at the last days of one of history’s most evil men. But since a lot of us don’t understand German, what happens if you replace the subtitles in the famous scene where he cusses out his generals with some of your own? Perhaps the funniest part is Hitler is griping about something quite obscure; you may have to read about the Endless Eight here to get the context. But I once read a comment on Amazon.com that Fruits Basket is so cute it might have caused Hitler to change his ways had he seen it.
