Japan has seen a surge of shock horror films in the past decade with such movies as Ichi the Killer, Audition, and now, The Machine Girl joins these ranks.

Released last year, Machine Girl stars grade-A super cutie Minase Yashiro as a one-armed school girl with a gatling gun for an arm and a serious axe to grind. See, this femme fatale had her brother murdered by a Yakuza boss’ son and now she wants blood - lots of it.

Straight off the bat, this film is super cheese. We’re talking thick cheddar. Dialogue like “Hahaha! I’m the devil! I’m the devil!” and “How do you like my drill bra?” are all a common occurance here. That’s not to say that the film’s bad. In fact, Machine Girl can best be described as having plot elements of Kill Bill, the violence and gore of Planet Terror, and the cheesy, campiness of Evil Dead. So if you enjoyed any or all of those movies then you should enjoy this film very much.

But of course, the film isn’t perfect. Like any cult film, some may be turned off by the amateurish acting, low budget special effects, and afore mentioned cheesy dialogue. Still, if you can get past these minor (or major) gripes, you’ll find a campy, fun, and gory movie well worth watching. Oh, and for the record, drill bras rock.
