Sogen Kato, the oldest living man in Tokyo was supposed to celebrate his 111th birthday last July 22nd but it turns out that he’s already dead. The local officials of Tokyo’s centenarian ward had been trying to contact Kato in order to update their records in preparation for the upcoming “Respect for the Elderly Day” this September, but his family were always ignoring all their questions and request up to the point that they were even chased out of his property.

The ward officials grew tired of the situation and so they decided to force their way into Kato’s home and just when the local officials of Tokyo decided to give him a surprise visit on his birthday, they were the ones who were surprised!

They were surprised to see Kato’s mummiffied body lying in a bed covered with blanket instead of seeing him in front of a big cake with 111 candles.

The post-mortem examination revealed that Sato may have been dead for more than 30 years and it seems that his family tried to hide his death so that they could inherit the 9.5 million yen widower’s pension guaranteed to him.
