A new automatic door made by the company Tanaka Seisakusyo is a futuristic sliding bar apparatus that opens just as wide as your body is. Using sensors that detect the size of the object approaching, its multiple slats open up individually for people to pass through.

The door’s appeal lies not only in its sci-fi like appearance, but also in its allowing only a fraction of the space needed open, therefore making it useful in environments that allow little dust flow, like medical and food facilities. From what I see, it’s pretty much just an upgrade from the sliding doors we have now, except it creates even less wind flow. There’s undoubtedly more work to be done before the door starts becoming more common, however, as it seems like the people going through the door had to wait a little bit for the space to adjust. The reaction time is probably one thing they can calibrate better, so the go-throughers don’t have to adjust their own body positions to fit the newly formed entrance.

Tanaka Seisakusyo (Adachi-ku, Tokyo) is a can making manufacturing and sales company.
