The government in Iwamizawa, Hokkaido, reported a total of nine of their elementary and middle schools were affected by food poisoning due to the broccoli salads that the school offered for lunch. Hokkaido’s government reported that the broccoli salads served for the city’s schools on February 9 contained salmonella. They also found the same genotype of bacteria in the stools of the victims of the food poisoning. Over 1,500 students received symptoms of the food poisoning and are currently recovering.
The tools used to mix the salad were contaminated with bacteria so some believe that the cleanliness of the kitchen should be improved. Another possibility is that a nearby chicken may have affected the salad. The Iwamizawa Healthcare Center demanded for the kitchen to be thoroughly sanitized before any further actions.
Hopefully this food poisoning doesn’t spread much farther. I wish the best for those who are suffering!
