It was just on Thursday that Oxford University Press made this unexpected announcement. They said that they’d be putting the word “hentai” into their Oxford English Dictionary. It’s not the only addition as it is piled among the other new words including: LOL, OMG and rotoscoping. Here’s how it would look if you were to open the dictionary itself:

Pronunciation: /hɛnˈtʌɪ/
noun
[mass noun]
a subgenre of the Japanese genres of manga and anime, characterized by overtly sexualized characters and sexually explicit images and plots.

Origin:
1990s: Japanese, literally ‘abnormal, perverted’

Back in 2004, another word “otaku,” also originating from Japan, was added to the same dictionary. The 2nd edition of the shortened version of this dictionary titled, The Oxford Dictionary of English, obtained this word in the year of 2005. In its third edition it received the word “hikikomori” just in 2010.
