According to The Geographical Survey Institute on Thursday, all 28 benchmarks and triangulation points in 3 of Japan’s prefectures have fallen by a range of 20 to 84 centimeters. These prefectures are all in Northeastern region of Japan, and are the most devastating of the tsunami hit prefectures.
In Rikuzentakata, Iwata Prefecture, the largest fall of 84 cm occurred in the geography of the region. In Ishinomaki, Miyagi Prefecture, drop of 78cm was observed. As for Soma, Fukushima Prefecture, a drop of 29 cm was found. All these findings were obtained by the Global Positioning System.
The drops were caused by a sharp movement of plates below the Tohoku region, making the regions to be even more vulnerable to possible floods.
I do hope these geographical changes to Japan would come to an end. Or the citizens of the region may never be able to return to their home again.
