On Saturday Night Live a little clip of a Michigan State campus “J-Pop America Fun Time Now!” was aired, and let me say, if you know anything about Japanese culture, it is hilarious to watch.
Rebecca-san and Jonathan-san, the hosts of J-Pop America, really take their love for all-things-Japanese to the extreme. They step into the role of Japanese-enthusiast Caucasians trying to be so Japanese to the point of believing they are (or should be) Japanese citizens. They invite a Hello Kitty fanatic and even sing some Japanese songs. To make things more funny, the hosts and guest speak in a stilted English and end sentences with “-duru” to make everything they say more Japanese.
Mark-sensei, their Japanese ‘professor,’ also appears multiple times, making a disclaimed when he says that Rebecca-san and Jonathan-san “have latched onto a very narrow and cartoon-based view of Japanese culture.” He adds great commentary that pops the hilarity of the entire program.
“Three of us look so very Japanese.” –Hello Kitty fanatic
“You’re white, people. You’re white, people, okay? And if there is, ya know, such a thing as a loving version of racism, I think you’ve found it.” –Mark-sensei
