The Japanese Tourism Agency announced on Monday that the proposal for 10,000 free flights for foreigners to Japan is cancelled. The Japanese Tourism Agency planned on using 1.1 billion yen about 14 million dollars from their requested funds for this program. The purpose of this project was to promote that Japan is a safe place to go to.
The Japanese Tourism Agency listed their reasons for the cancellation, “We realise that this announcement is going to disappoint thousands of people around the world, but we hope people will understand how insensitive it would appear for the Japanese Government to give people free flights to Japan when the cities, towns and villages devastated by the tsunami are still in desperate need of funding for reconstruction. We also would not want people thinking that the generous donations given from around the world to aide those affected by the disaster was being spent on giving people free flights.”
Although people will be disappointed from not getting a free flight to Japan, I think it’s reasonable because there are more important places the money should go to than free flights. What do you think of this cancellation?
