This past week marked the Viz Pictures release of 20th Century Boys 1 on DVD, the first in a sure-to-be-a-hit trilogy, as well as first news of Studio Ghibli’s next project. It was only a matter of time before I wrote something about the happiest place on earth, Tokyo’s Akihabara, AKA Electric Ladyland. In fact I tried to spin it as a feature for date week, since apparently one can find love even in Akihabara, but let’s be honest: being in Japan’s (and by extension the world’s) otaku and electronics capital is infinitely better than the highest raptures of earthly love. To begin on a serious note, I was among those who cheered the news that Japan’s entrenched, right-wing “Liberal” Democratic Party was finally giving somebody else a chance to run the country. Yet we may pause to shed a tear for the man whose incompetence helped bringed about this change, Taro Aso; for he was, after all, one of us. I hereby present a salute to the man we hate to love, Japan’s late and (debatably) great Otaku Prime Minister (that’s him in the lower right-hand corner). More »
