The widely respected director, Takeshi Kitano has comeback to the Yakuza film genre at Cannes with Outrageous. This movie is supposed to be horribly violent. Even though he was able to get into the festival with the reputation of it being good, it was slammed by French newspapers. Le Monde called it “his worst ever film,” and said the “depiction of excessive violence was grotesque,” while Figaro couldn’t understand why it had even been entered in the competition in the first place. It was a part of my childhood, and to this day, I still get excited when I hear about Pokemon. The new Pokemon movie, Phantom Ruler: Zoark, is coming to Japan on July 10th, and some new footage has just been shown on the Japanese television show, Pokemon Sunday. More »

From Ningin: Ponyo is to Hayao Miyazaki as Little Mermaid is to Disney. Growing up it’s always been a childhood dream of mine to become Ariel from The Little Mermaid — red hair, sea shell bra and all. There wasn’t a pool in sight that I didn’t reenact Ariel emerging from the water to do the famous, fierce Ariel hair-toss-out-of-the-water move. Having just seen Ponyo, I feel like I ought to take back all those embarrassing childhood memories. More »
